The city of San Jose in California has officially handed its well deserved flowers to the Filipino labor heroes who helped in revolutionizing the history of America's labor movement.

On Friday, Nov. 5, the San Jose Department of Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services together with the Filipino community and elected leaders of the city led the opening and dedication ceremony of the Delano Manongs Park.

The park was named as Delano Manongs last year to pay tribute to the Pinoy farmworkers who helped to launch a significant component in the page of the United States' record books, the Delano Grape Strike.

Manong, an Ilocano term which means "elder brother", possesses a historical connotation in the U.S. This refers to the Filipino farmworkers who made gigantic contributions on the said movement from 1965 to 1970.

In 1965, from the cast of main characters in the likes of Larry Itliong, Philip Vera Cruz and Pete Velasco, they organized around 2,000 Filipino workers to let their voices be heard against table grape growers in Delano, California. The Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC), which were mostly Filipinos, demanded for a better salary wage and working conditions.

At that time, Filipino grape pickers were only handed a 90 cents an hour, which is estimated to be $2 or more in a daily payment while confined to live in harsh status. As immigrants, they were also denied to enjoy labor rights nor own a property, business, or be married.

As such, the strike pushed AWOC to unite and form an alliance with Mexican Cezar Chávez’s National Farm Workers Association (NWFA) to forge America's first agricultural union, the United Farm Workers (UFW).

By 1970, after five years of struggle, the Delano grape growers ultimately agreed to sign a contract with the UFW, signaling a wonderful time in the United States that paved the way for social justice and labor rights activism.

“The city of San Jose values its Filipino-American community, and we’re blessed to be surrounded by such a loving community,” said Magdalena Carrasco, council member of San Jose.

For Daniel Lazo, a San Jose resident and an official of Filipino-American non-profit group "Lead Filipino", his plea to honor the Delano Manongs came into fruition.

Last 2020, he was the one responsible for submitting the "Delano Manongs" as one of the nominees for the park when the San Jose city council put out a call for naming options. Garnering 72 percent of the public support, the Delano Manongs park was officially established last year.

According to Lazo, the naming not only serves as a historical reminder of the Delano Manongs' outstanding contributions to the U.S. soil, but also a safeguard and an advocacy to fight Asian hate and racism to their community.

“Not only did I find the name fitting to recognize our Filipino American history but this was a time of a lot of Asian hate and racism especially to our senior community," Lazo said.

The 5.6-acre Delano Manongs Park has a playground, with picnic tables, and flowering orchard trees that are perfect for family gathering and Filipinos who wish to feel the glorious pride of the labor heroes.

The park is located at the corner of Gimelli Way in San Jose.

The idea of paradise for most of us is to escape and sit quietly on the beach. When we heard the best beaches in California the first city that would come to our mind is Malibu.

From its museums, refined boutiques, farmers markets up to cliffside shorelines and vast beaches to this tranquil coastal oasis truly shines under the mid-year sun. Create your best experience by  planning ahead of your itinerary in Malibu and get ready to get tan lines with the sun.

First and foremost because there are an overwhelming number of beaches there, beach enthusiasts should put the Malibu California at the top of their holiday wish lists. Of course, some are superior to others, but the majority are stunning and well worth the trip. Beach lovers will have a field day merely planning their destinations and itineraries before their trip even starts because there are so many to pick from.

Paradise Cove, Zuma, El Matador State, Leo Carillo State Park, Malibu Lagoon State, Tapanga, Carbon, Surfrider, Broad and El Pascador State Beach are all located in the City of Malibu. Who would have thought that this city is full of beautiful beaches that everyone loves to go to. Remember to bring sunblock to protect you from getting sunburn and also water to stay hydrated.

Truly, Los Angeles is very rich when it comes to nature and other resources. We just have to discover it on our own and nurture it.

Bear Valley is a location in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Alpine County, the least populated county of California. It is home to the Bear Valley Ski Resort, which offers winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding. Tucked away in the Sierra Nevada mountains, Bear Valley Resort is a serene and beautiful destination for a winter getaway. The resort offers a wide variety of activities for both kids and adults, including skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, and sledding. There are also several restaurants and bars on site, as well as a spa for those looking to relax and rejuvenate. The area is also popular for hiking and camping in the summer months.

Prior to the 2010–11 ski season, 400 more acres of non–lift serviced terrain were made available to the public, bringing the resort's total skiable area to 1680, ranking it ninth among California resorts. The resort is renowned for its dedication to snowmaking and competence in the field of snow science. Due to effective snow management, the resort was one of only six in California to remain open until the middle of spring through the worst droughts in recorded history.

Alpine touring, telemark, backcountry skis, or snowshoes are just a few of the many ways to explore the Bear Valley backcountry. Bear Valley-based Mountain Adventure Seminars provides telemark skiing instruction, avalanche safety training, mountaineering guiding services, and extended overnight backcountry experiences.

Winter and summer activities can differ quite a bit. In the winter, people might enjoy activities such as skiing, sledding, or building snowmen. In the summer, people might enjoy activities such as swimming, fishing, or playing in the park. The best thing in Bear Valley is that you can do both. When the snow melts and marks the start of summer kayaking, hiking, mountain biking are some of the recreational activities you can do.

For those who love marine wildlife and ocean views, the Sea Lion Point Trail is ideal for you. You can enjoy hiking on this pleasant, well-maintained trail because it is a 0.6-mile loop. The Sea Lion Point Trail is one of the best short hikes in Big Sur and is suitable for the majority of Point Lobos State Reserve visitors.

Sea Lion Point is the highlight of the trail as you’ll have a chance to see and hear the sea lions. You may also pass by Headland Cove and Sea Lion Cove while visiting.

(Credits to Roadtripping California)

Headland Cove has squirrels scampering across the trail and birds nesting in the vegetation. This cove offers breathtaking views of the water and the rocky coastline. It differs from Sea Lion Cove in that it has a large number of sea lions that require binoculars to see clearly.

Hikers walk down a staircase near the coves to get a better look at the animals. However, it is always advisable to be cautious by staying away from the edges and keeping an eye out for unexpected waves, which can cause accidents.

In the Cypress Grove/Sea Lion Point parking lot is where you'll find the Sea Lion Point Trail. From the information booth, continue straight on the park road. Take the trail towards the cypress trees from the very first parking lot you'll see.

Furthermore, it is recommended that you wear closed-toed walking shoes with good traction and comfortable clothing that can protect your skin. Don’t forget to bring water, food, a digital camera with zoom lens or binoculars, sun protection, and bug spray when visiting the trail.

It's a fantastic location for visiting with friends, family, and even coworkers. Take on a challenge and explore the Sea Lion Point Trail.
